Why are gifts held before they reach me?

A gift does not land in your bank the instant it is given. It is held briefly at Xerish Storehouse first. Here is why that hold exists and why it is good for you.

What it's for

The hold protects both you and your givers, and it is part of what makes giving on Xerish charitable rather than a simple money transfer. It is short and predictable.

How it works

  • Refund / clawback window. Cards and bank transfers can be reversed by the giver's bank shortly after a charge. The hold covers that window so a reversed payment never lands in your account and then has to be pulled back out.
  • Two tiers. Gifts attached to a post or campaign hold 24 hours; direct gifts (no post) hold 48 hours.
  • Advisory clearance. Because gifts are grant recommendations to the Storehouse, the brief hold is also when the recommendation is confirmed against your current vetting status before the grant dispatches automatically.
  • Then it moves. When the hold clears, the Storehouse grants the money to your Stripe account — usually within the hour, with no action from you.

Governing limitations

  • Open content waits longer. A gift on a post or campaign that is still open stays in the "Tied to open content" bucket and only enters the hold/release path when that content closes or hits its goal.
  • The hold is not a fee. Nothing is deducted during the hold. The only Storehouse charge is the 0.5% annual balance fee, which is separate.
  • You cannot shorten it. The window is fixed; there is no expedite option.

Good to know

  • This hold is why the model is charitable and tax-advantaged rather than a pass-through — the funds genuinely rest with the 501(c)(3) sponsor before being granted.
  • Watch the "In hold" bucket in your Financial Center to see exactly what is clearing and when.
  • Failed transfers (for example, a closed bank account) keep the funds safe at the Storehouse until you fix the issue.
