The Storehouse, the IRS, and what changes at full determination

Xerish Storehouse has applied for 501(c)(3) status. While the IRS reviews that application, the Storehouse operates under an interim fiscal sponsorship partner. This article explains that bridge in plain terms and what changes when determination is granted.

What it's for

You may be asked by a giver or a board member, "Is Xerish a real charity yet?" The honest answer: the structure is built and operating, the application is filed, and determination is pending. Here is exactly where things stand.

How it works

  • Today (review period). The Storehouse runs as a 501(c)(3) DAF sponsor with its IRS determination pending (Form 1023 in process). During this period — typically 6 to 9 months — its charitable operations are covered by an interim fiscal sponsorship partner so that giving, vetting, and grants can run normally.
  • The bridge is invisible in your day-to-day. Gifts are still held, vetting still runs, grants still dispatch to your Stripe account. Nothing in your Financial Center changes because of the sponsorship arrangement.
  • At full determination. When the IRS issues a determination letter, the Storehouse stands fully on its own. An independent governing board is seated to oversee grants and policy. The fiscal sponsorship bridge is no longer needed.

Governing limitations

  • Tax-deductibility is intended, not yet settled. We describe giving as intended to be tax-deductible. Do not tell your givers deductibility is final or guaranteed until determination is issued — and even then, deductibility depends on each giver's own situation.
  • The interim partner is never named. For legal reasons we refer only to a fiscal sponsorship partner or interim sponsor. Please use the same generic language with your givers; do not speculate about who the partner is.
  • Determination timing is the IRS's. We cannot promise a date. "Pending" is the accurate word everywhere.

Good to know

  • An independent board is a hard requirement at launch — it is the real governance control, not a technicality.
  • If a giver wants the precise legal framing, point them to the public transparency page at xerish.com rather than improvising.
  • Your status as a vetted recipient does not change across the bridge; you stay on the Pre-Approved Recipient List.
